Still life with watermelons, grapes, apples, pomegranates and other fruits, with two children

oil on canvas

unframed: 95.3 x 132.2 cm.; 37 1/2 x 52 in.

framed: 100.6 x 137.7 cm.; 39 5/8 x 54 1/4 in.

The painting has a firm relining which has somewhat flattened the paint surface, the paint surface is slightly dirty, and the varnish is slightly discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals the rather milky varnish. There appear to be some more recent retouchings around the chin and the shoulder of the child on the right, and to some small, pin-prick losses scattered on the left-hand side. There are older retouchings throughout the rest of the composition, with smaller areas scattered in the central still life and larger, more notable areas in the stone ledge lower left, in the whole watermelon in the centre, and in the lower right corner. There is a large area of wash retouching upper left approx. 20 x 35 cm. The painting presents well in its current state.

We are grateful to Dott. Alberto Crispo and Dott. Gianluca Bocchi, who both endorse the attribution to Campidoglio on the basis of digital images. The watermelon at right, here, is almost identical to that with a knife in it, in the painting by Campidoglio sold at Christie's, London, 12 September 2018, lot 24.1
