Pietà

oil on oak panel

unframed: 40.3 x 28.6 cm.; 15 7/8 x 11 1/4 in.

framed: 50.5 x 39 cm.; 19 7/8 x 15 3/8 in.

The panel is cradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is clean, and the varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals two campaigns of restoration. The older consists of fainter retouchings, which appear in the white drapery of the Virgin's head cloth and Christ's loin cloth; to areas of the sky, particularly upper left and centre left; and to fine lines in Christ's arm. The more recent campaign is largely confined to the margins, with a concentrated line to a short split, upper right (5 cm. long), and more concentrated small areas in the lower corners; there are also a few scattered pinprick retouchings in the figures' faces and in Christ's upper arm and elbow, and in the edge of the white cloth in the Virgin's hand, centre right. The panel presents well in its current state and is in fairly good condition.
