signed and dated centre left: JM MOLENAER / 1637

oil on canvas

unframed: 81.3 x 109 cm.; 32 x 42 7/8 in.

framed: 109 x 135.2 cm.; 42 7/8 x 53 1/4 in.

The canvas is lined and the paint surface is relatively dirty, with a discoloured varnish. There are small, discoloured retouchings visible scattered throughout the background and the foreground, as well as more sparsely in the drapery of some of the figures. There is some frame abrasion with associated retouching, along all four margins. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms all this and further reveals thicker bands of retouching along the top half of the left margin and along the lower margin, but otherwise does not reveal more than what is already visible to the naked eye. The painting would benefit from cleaning and appears in overall fairly good condition.
