oil on canvas

unframed: 98.3 x 115.6 cm.; 38 7/8 x 41 5/8 in.

framed: 132.2 x 141.1 cm.; 52 x 55 1/8 in.

The canvas is lined, and the paint surface is slightly dirty with a slightly discoloured varnish. A few very minor surface scuff marks are visible scattered in the composition. There are some small losses to an area of damage beneath the carved relief slab lower right, with some associated retouching - this area measures approx. 3 x 8 cm. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a fluorescing varnish underneath which the aforementioned retouching is confirmed, as well as wash retouching scattered through the sky, a few fine lines and small spots to disguise the appearance of craquelure, and a more concentrated patch upper right approx. 8 x 10 cm. There is also retouching along the left margin. In the main composition there appear to be only some minor cosmetic retouchings, notably scattered in the columns on the left. In overall fairly good condition.
