William Carneigie, 7th Earl of Northesk, was Rear Admiral on board the 100 gun H.M.S. Britannia and third in command at the Battle of Trafalgar. After that great victory for the British, he was promoted to Rear-Admiral of the Red. He is buried alongside Nelson and Collingwood in St. Paul's cathedral.

Edridge's sensitive handling of his subject, combined with his use of delicate washes create a subtle portrait in marked contrast to the traditionally heroic representations.
