TWO WATERCOLOURS BY PAUL SIGNAC FROM THE SERIE 'PORTS DE FRANCE' (LOTS 115 & 116)

In 1928, Signac met Gaston Lévy, an imaginative businessman and avid collector. Right from the beginning, a special relationship formed between the two men. Very soon thereafter, the artist suggested a remarkable project to his friend and patron, which he explained in detail in December 1928. 'For a long time I have dreamed of creating a major series of watercolours on "Les Ports de France" (Ports of France). I have identified 40 English Channel ports, 40 Ocean ports, 20 Mediterranean ports. In all, a hundred or so [...] If you were to approve this project, [...] I would leave in February for the Mediterranean ports. In April, I would sail up along the Ocean ports in order to end up at the Northern ports in the summer. I think it would take 5 or 6 months of work, a little bit crazy! I would do two different watercolours in each port, one for you and the other for me, and you would choose your favourite one.' (Letter to G. Lévy, 26 December 1928, Signac Archives).

Gaston Lévy immediately agreed to finance the project. Signac embarked on his journey in March 1929 and completed it in 1931. These two exceptionally fresh works bear witness to this endeavour which crowned the artist's watercolour career.
