Description

A PETRIFIED WOOD LOG SECTION

unidentified species

Probably Indonesia

Measuring 18 inches tall.

An attractive petrified wood stump that was cut from a larger log and retained its original contours. The undulating top portion of the log has been polished to a mirror finish and displays the perfectly preserved formation of the tree's growth rings, accented in colors of brown, ochres, cream and white, which gives it the unmistakable appearance of wood.

Petrified wood occurs when trees are quickly covered with silica-rich sediments that later seep into the trees and harden into quartz. Coloration results from the presence of trace elements and minerals in the sediments.
