MOZART, WOLFGANG AMADEUS
Quintuor Concertant pour Piano Forte Hautboi Clarinette Cor & Basson, [parts], Augsburg: Gombart et Comp, [1799]
FIRST EDITION OF THE PIANO AND WIND QUINTET IN E FLAT, K.452, folio (34.3 x 24.3cm), engraved throughout, plate no.285, five parts for piano (7 leaves), 'Oboe', 'Clarinetto in B', 'Corno in Dis', and 'Fagotto', title-wrapper to piano part, A TALL COPY, UNCUT AND UNBOUND, original stitching to piano part, a few early alterations in orange crayon, on bluish paper, small tear to margin of title
RARE: we have traced no copy in Britain and only one in the United States (Library of Congress), and none offered at auction. This is the original version of one of Mozart's most celebrated chamber works and the first quintet for piano and wind to have been composed. Mozart wrote it for his subscription concerts in 1784 and told his father "I myself consider it to be the best work I have ever composed. It is written for one oboe, one clarinet, one horn, one bassoon and the pianoforte. How I wish you could have heard it! And how beautifully it was performed" (letter of 10 April 1784). Artaria of Vienna had earlier brought out an arrangement of the quintet as a "Quartetto" for piano and strings.

Haberkamp, p.223 (plate 180); Hoboken 212; RISM MM 6338; H. Rheinfurth, Musikverlag Gombart (1999), no.526 (giving the date)

From the collection of Ernst Rudorff (1840-1916), Mozart scholar and editor for the Breitkopf & Härtel Complete Edition (1879). This copy of Mozart's quintet has never been offered for sale.
