Description

ROMANTISME SECRET

An album of erotic and salacious prints. [Paris, 1840s-1850s]

folio (382 x 285mm.), comprising: 19 coloured lithographs mostly by Devéria; 11 (of 12?) coloured lithographs featuring public figures with names and captions; 12 lithographs by Devéria from a series entitled "Les proverbes in action"; 8 smaller coloured lithographs (2 to a leaf) with captions; 3 further coloured plates (with an uncoloured duplicate of the first loosely inserted), each plate within a folding mount, two manuscript notes (in different hands) signed by Devéria loosely inserted at front of volume, half red morocco, spine gilt in compartments and titled "Romantisme secret", top edge gilt, slipcase, plate 11 of Les proverbes torn, very slight damage to a couple of plates

Achille Devéria (1800-1857) was a successful book illustrator and portraitist who created several series of erotic prints (his brother and two of his children were also artists, so the notes in this volume could be by any of them). The prints of named figures depict statesmen in various compromising situations, and the final print depicts the Curé Mingrat, a priest who raped and murdered one of his parishioners.

PROVENANCE:
