8vo (195 x 118mm.), 3 engraved title-pages for Contes moraux, engraved portrait after Cochin, 23 engraved plates after Gravelot and Moreau; engraved title-page and 3 plates for Bélisaire; 11 engraved plates for Les Incas; 11 engraved plates for La Pharsale; contemporary French red morocco gilt with the arms of the duc d'Orléans [Olivier 2572, this exact armorial not found], flat spine gilt with small fleurs-de-lys stamps, gilt edges, slight browning towards end


A set of proof plates for various works by (or translated by) Marmontel, without the text, most of which were designed by Gravelot. The spine is lettered "Figures premières épreuves".

PROVENANCE:

probably Louis Philippe (1773-1850) who established the library at Neuilly; Bibliothèque du roi, Neuilly, stamp on inside front cover (the library was sold at auction in 1852)
