Description

LISZT, FRANZ

Autograph musical manuscript, on an albumleaf, of a "Preludio" for piano, Nuremberg, 11 October 1843, signed and dated by the composer

"Preludio...F. Liszt Nurenberg 11 Octobre/1843", a flamboyant pianistic flourish notated in dark brown ink on two staves, comprising five diminished-seventh chords, of which the first four are arpeggiated, followed by two non-chromatic chords (ending with a unresolved dominant seventh)

1 page, 13.7 x 23cm. on a printed six-stave albumleaf ("Imray's Improved"), laid down on card (36 x 26.5cm), with two early photographic portraits of the composer, slight staining to the edges

This fine albumleaf contains a slightly extended version of the "Preludio" that Liszt wrote in St Petersburg on 9 May 1842 (Sotheby's, 28 May 2015, lot 251). See also the next lot in the present sale. This was apparently Liszt's only visit to Nuremberg during his Wanderjähre, the 1840s, when he toured throughout Europe, Russia and Turkey
