Descrizione di dugento gemme antiche nelle quali si contiene un saggio del vario disegno usato dalle più colte antiche nazioni. Rome: Antonio Fulgoni, 1792

5 volumes, folio (328 x 202mm.), one volume of text with woodcut armorial on title-page and woodcut tailpieces, 4 wooden boxes each containing 50 plaster copies of antique gems, with a letterpress list of contents pasted to the inside of each cover, uniform half calf over blue marbled boards, spines gilt in compartments with morocco lettering-pieces, bindings with scrapes and tears

An early dactyliotheca, a fascinating reproduction of 200 antique gems produced by Federico Dolce. These were produced as Grand Tour souvenirs by the workshop founded in Rome by Christian Dehn (1696-1770), and continued by his daughter and her husband, and their son Federico Dolce (1766-1849). The workshop had a collection of more than 5,000 casts of gems and each series was issued with a letterpress description. This particular collection of 200 gems was first issued in Rome in 1790 and again, as here, in 1792.
