One of Indonesia’s most revered and internationally active contemporary artists, Agus Suwage investigates the interrelationships between multiple forms of identity, probing questions about society, culture, religion in critical yet often humorous ways. Intimate, yet starkly powerful, The Kiss #4 is a highly significant painting from Suwage’s ouevre that beautifully reveals the artist’s own reckoning, or rather devout fascination with self and other, good and evil, life and death. Reminiscent of the canonic work by Rodin or Gustave Klimt’s famous lovers, the current work focuses on the embrace between artist and a skull with a halo. Executed in wonderful detail, the faces of both characters are rendered in varying shades of pink and red, while the rest of the canvas is completed in greyscale or left unfinished and blank. The Kiss #4 embodies Suwage’s relentless search for meaning that transcends dogma and reveals beauty, humor and insight in unexpected ways.
