A RARE GOLD PAIR CASED REPOUSSÉ VERGE WATCH, THE OUTER CASE WITH CHALCEDONY AND PRECIOUS STONE-SET BUTTERFLY

• Movement: gilded full plate, verge escapement, plain flat three-arm brass balance, ruby endstone, cock and foot decoratively pierced and engraved with scrolling foliage, fusee and chain, square baluster pillars, signed Martineau, London

• Dial: white enamel, Roman numerals, Arabic outer minute ring, gold filigree hands

• Cases: plain gold inner, winding aperture to back, the pendant with later decorative stirrup-form bow, later plain bezel, inner case with incuse mark possibly Piei or Piel • outer gold repoussé, the back centred with a butterfly the wings of chalcedony, body set with ruby, sapphire and emerald stones, butterfly's legs and antennae chased within the repoussé scheme, surrounded by shell and scrollwork against a stippled ground, bezel with floral scrollwork between swags
