A GOLD AND ENAMEL TURTLE-FORM WATCH WITH HEART-SHAPED MOVEMENT

CIRCA 1885

[瑞士製黃金飾琺瑯海龜造型懷錶備心形機芯,年份約1885]


Movement: unsigned gilded heart-form, cylinder escapement, flat three-arm balance

Dial: white enamel, Roman numerals, outer minute ring with Arabic numerals

Case: gold in the form of a turtle, the animal's back with enamel in imitation of tortoiseshell, the turtle's head, underside and legs chased and engraved in naturalistic manner, ruby-set eyes, pendant ring in the form of a serpent, plain gold polished heart-form cuvette with apertures for winding and hand-setting

An almost identical turtle decorated in the same manner can be found at the Patek Philippe Museum (inv. S-763) and is illustrated in P. Friess, The Emergence of the Portable Watch, Patek Philippe Museum, Part IV, p. 452. A further similar watch was offered at Antiquorum Hong Kong, 27 May 1991, lot 99, the latter watch was attributed to J. Friedmann.
