CIRCLE OF GEORGE GOWER
PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN, THREE-QUARTER LENGTH, WITH HIS DOG
oil on panel
33 by 26 in.; 83.8 by 66 cm.
The thick panel has been reinforced on the back with brackets to repair an old split which is also visible on the front of the panel about 7 inches from the right edge. The front of the panel is mostly flat but is separated from the right edge of the frame and two cracks are growing from the bottom edge up toward the center, one about 3 inches from the right edge and one about one inch from the left edge, with requisite small paint losses. The paint surface of the portrait is otherwise stable and the image still reads relatively well. Under UV inspection, retouching is visible throughout in multiple campaigns, with a few concentrated areas of repair in the upper left corner, the right torso of the man, in the dog, and thorough strokes of retouching throughout the face and costume. We recommend contacting an independent restorer to discuss any repairs. Offered in a simply carved ebonized wood frame with gilt inner liner.
