Exquisitely modeled and polished to a smooth, highly tactile finish, the present piece is remarkable for its exceptional naturalistic carving and the unreserved use of large, fine material, a testimony to the technical prowess of the jade carvers and the abundant supply of fine quality stones during the Qianlong period. See a related Qianlong period jade carving of a finger citron in the Alan and Simone Hartman Collection, illustrated in Robert Kleiner, Chinese Jades from the Collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, Hong Kong, 1996, pl. 203. Other Qianlong period examples include one sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 8th April 2010, lot 1905; another from the Jingguantang Collection, sold three times at Christie's, first in Hong Kong, 3rd November 1996, lot 501, later in New York, 20th September 2005, lot 24 and again 24th March 2011, lot 1557; and a further example sold at Christie's London, 11th May 2010, lot 92.
