A FINE AND RARE WHITE AND RUSSET JADE 'QILIN' PENDANT
QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD
清乾隆 白玉雕滄海麒麟紋珮
the rectangular plaque pierced with a central circular aperture, carved to the top with a robust recumbent qilin with hoofed hind legs tucked underneath the muscular body, its long bushy tail extending down one side to meet the crest of the rolling waves below, the pure white stone with some russet veining

Compare a white jade pendant of similar composition but with the mythical beast carved in a more geometric archaistic style, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 19th May 1979, lot 729. Another carved with more openwork was sold in the same rooms, 30th October 1991, lot 479. Compare another with chilong surrounding a central pierced disc, also attributed to the Qianlong period, illustrated in James C. Y. Watt, Chinese Jades from the Collection of the Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, 1989, pl. 68.
