PLANTE GRASSE ET FIOLE

Signed T. de Lempicka (lower right)

Oil on canvas

22 by 18 in. (55.9 by 45.7 cm)

Framed: 29¼ by 25¼ in. (74.3 by 64.1 cm)

Painted circa 1941.

The canvas is unlined. The edges have been taped. Minor frame abrasion is present toward the extreme perimeter with two pinholes toward the upper right corner. Faint stretcher marks run horizontally across the top and bottom edges of the composition. Extremely faint lines of stable craquelure are visible in a few limited areas, including in the lighter pigments to the left of the top leaf of the plant as well as within the plate and in the reddish brown pigments of the pot. A faint line of minor abrasion runs horizontally through the middle of the top leaf, extending 2 inches to its left and 1 inch to its right. A one inch diagonal repair runs through the left-most edge of the plate and corresponds with a patch visible on the back of the canvas. Under UV light: certain original pigments fluoresce and some minor areas of inpainting are visible, including at the top left extreme edge, a small hairline stroke to the right of the male figure's face, a 1-inch vertical area with the drapery to the right of the portrait, a 1-inch horizontal stroke within the rolled sheet at far left between the two leaves of the plant, a couple tiny strokes within the book at bottom left and below the white cards at bottom left, and finally in direct correspondence with the aforementioned repair. An unevenly applied varnish also fluoresces in certain areas. Overall the work is in good condition.
