This Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea ‘James Cameron’ was originally purchased new in aid of the ‘Wheels of Wellness’ charity that provides transportation for medical purposes to the residents of Vancouver Island, BC. The watch, accompanied by all its packaging and documentation was then sent to James Cameron himself. The watch was returned with all the box, out packaging, paperwork, documentation and accompanying literature signed by Mr. Cameron, including the pens used. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only example to bear James Cameron’s signature to ever be offered to the market.
On 26 March 2012, film-maker and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence James Cameron descended into the Mariana Trench in his submersible, making the deepest-ever solo dive. It was the first manned dive to the deepest part of the Trench, known as Challenger Deep, since the pioneering two-man Trieste expedition of 1960. Only one passenger joined both voyages: a Rolex watch. James Cameron also took the 1960 Deep Sea Special watch produced by Rolex with him in the cockpit, as a tribute to the pioneers of the Trieste and as a symbolic connection between two eras of exploration.
A portion of the proceeds of the sale will be donated to the Wheels of Wellness Charity in Vancouver Island, BC.
