copper, abalone shell
19 in. (48.3 cm) high
15 1/2 in. (39.4 cm) diameter of shade
Overall in very good condition. The copper surfaces throughout shade and base display a beautiful, naturalistic texture with nuanced aged patina. The copper surfaces with scattered minor surface scratches, abrasions, discolorations, and surface soiling concentrated to the recessed contours, consistent with age and use. The copper with some occasional areas of oxidation throughout, including some scattered spots on the shade and base. The shade with an area of more concentrated oxidation surrounding one of the shells and to the four feet that affix the base column to the foot, visible in the catalogue illustration and consistent with age. The abalone shells all appear to be original and undisturbed and display a rich and variegated iridescence when viewed firsthand with reflected light. When illuminated, the shells glow a warm soft orange tone. The abalone shells are in very good condition and present with scattered surface irregularities inherent to the natural texture of the material. Sotheby's does not guarantee electrical components and suggests having all wiring inspected by a licensed electrician.
