1975年贈與一南方機構

Dr. James D. Thornton was born in 1921 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. A successful physician who traveled frequently, he began collecting Chinese ceramics in the 1960s. Purchasing primarily from Frank Caro, successor to C.T. Loo, he amassed a formidable collection of Qing dynasty imperial porcelains. Based in Chicago, Dr. Thornton was a member of the illustrious group of collectors known as “The Orientals” which actively supported the Art Institute of Chicago. Generous with his collection, Dr. Thornton, loaned and gifted pieces to numerous institutions. A single owner ‘white glove’ sale of sixteen pieces from his collection, including several Qing dynasty imperial monochromes, was held at Christie’s Hong, 29th November 2017, lots 2801-2816.
