A BLUE AND WHITE 'LANÇA CHARACTERS' DISH

WANLI MARK AND PERIOD

明萬曆 青花梵文盤 《大明萬曆年製》款


the gently rounded sides rising from a tapering foot to an everted rim, painted in inky cobalt blue to the interior with radiating stylized petals containing lança characters around a central character within a double circle, the exterior with two rows of characters all enclosed within multiple double-line borders, and the base inscribed with a six-character mark within a double circle

A similar blue and white 'lança' dish with a six-character Wanli mark from the collection of the Qianlong Emperor was included in the exhibition, Obtaining refined enjoyment: the Qianlong Emperor's taste in ceramics, National Palace Museum, Taipei, 2012, cat. no. 105. A blue and white Wanli mark and period 'lança' bowl from the Severance and Greta Millikin Collection, is preserved in the Cleveland Museum of Art, acc. no. 1989.294. Another was sold at Christie's London, 20th-21st June 1984, lot 247, and again in our Hong Kong rooms, 28th-29th November 2019, lot 454.
