A BEIGE SOAPSTONE FIGURE OF A RECLINING LUOHAN

17TH / 18TH CENTURY

十七 / 十八世紀 壽山石雕笑獅羅漢臥像


the broad face with a gentle smile directed toward the Buddhist lion cub nuzzled under the left arm, loose robes falling over the body, the fabric finely incised with cloud pattern with traces of gilt, remnants of black and red pigments in the carefully articulated facial features and hair of the luohan and lion, the stone shifting from creamy ivory at one end to caramel tones at the other and with patches of red and black, wood stand (2)
