Untitled (Picnic on the Beach)

ferrotyped gelatin silver print, signed in pencil on the reverse, circa 1970s

image: 7 ½ by 11 in. (19.1 by 27.9 cm.)

Please note the colors in the online catalogue illustration may vary depending on screen settings. This ferrotyped gelatin silver print, on paper with a semi-glossy surface, is in generally excellent condition. The following are visible in raking light: a few soft crescent-shaped creases; scattered deposits of original retouching; and some hairline scratches, likely a result of the ferrotyping process. There is minor margin edge and corner wear. In the lower margin is a tape remnant. It is annotated in red ink '2 [circled] Spread, Crop 4 sides' in Japanese. On the reverse is a tape remnant at the upper edge. The edges are slightly age-darkened.

"Daido Moriyama's work is the direct reason for our interest in Japanese photography. After having collected modern and contemporary art as well as photography for two decades, we were blown away by the Klein/Moriyama show at Tate Modern and started focusing our collection on Japanese photography, among which some excellent works by Moriyama, such as this typical grainy beach scene." - Martijn van Pieterson
