"Beth Moon's work, and this particular photograph of Shebehon Forest from the series Island of the Dragon's Blood, is about the relationship between human beings and the environment and also about preserving photographic craft. Both subjects are central to Utópica's programme. Since its inception in 2007, Utópica has shared information related to the photographic processes, both historical and contemporary, as a way of spreading the history of the medium and also to support a greater appreciation of photographic prints.
Beth Moon’s mastery of the platinum-and-palladium process, as well as the beauty of her images, was what originally interested the gallery in her work. As a photographer, she explores the survival and evolution of her medium by using one of the oldest and the longest lasting photographic processes. Nature – untouched by man and one of the most relevant subjects of our age – is one of Moon’s dearest subjects. Seeking-out extraordinary, unusual trees in remote corners of the Earth, out of easy-reach of civilization, the photographer explores themes of survival. The trees she photographs are the last remaining of ancient forests, endangered by climate change, or like these dragon’s blood trees, by human greed." - Marcella Brandimarti
Utópica has established itself as one of the premier venues in Brazil dealing in modern, humanist and contemporary photography. The gallery has in its collection works by over more than 30 photographers and advises both beginning and experienced collectors. Utópica is the only Brazilian member of AIPAD.
