panorama, albumenized salt print from 4 waxed paper negatives, on the original 2-part mount with letterpress title and photographer's decorative monogram on the mount, 1856

image: overall 8 ⅜ by 45 ⅛ in. (21.3 by 114.6 cm.)

mount: overall 17 ⅞ by 46 ⅝ in. (45.4 by 118.4 cm.)

Please note the colors in the online catalogue illustration may vary depending on screen settings. Grading this panorama of albumenized salt prints on a scale of 1 to 10 – a 10 being a print with deep brown dark tones and highlights that retain all of their original detail – this panorama rates a 7. While the darks retain good detail, the highlights are somewhat yellowed and the edges have faded slightly, most noticeably in the left portion of the panorama. The darks in the left side of the image are more chocolate-brown while the darks on the right side more eggplant in tone. This photograph is in generally excellent condition. It is printed from 4 negatives to form one impressive, double-wide panoramic image. There is extensive original retouching at the seams where the exposures meet. There are some dark deposits of indeterminate nature in the sky. The print is mounted to 2 thick mounts joined by tape on the reverse. There are 4 small tears at the upper part of the seam between the 2 mounts. There are some faint yellow stains on the mounts. There is some soiling on the reverse of the mount. The following is written in an unidentified hand in pencil: 'GE2817' and 'de Clerq Panorma of Beirut albumenized salt PERS.'

"The Gary Edwards Gallery was previously located in Washington, D. C., and has been located in Southampton, N. Y., since 2017. Early photography is the gallery's specialty, with a large inventory of 1840s and 1850s calotypes and salt prints.

The photographs of Louis de Clercq are recognized for their original sense of composition that go far beyond descriptive works of the monuments and topography of the Middle East. This panorama of Beirut is a rare example of his few published panoramas." - Gary Edwards
