Description
GREENE, WILLIAM THOMAS
PARROTS IN CAPTIVITY. LONDON: GEORGE BELL, 1884-87
3 volumes. 8vo. 81 hand-finished color printed wood-engraved plates by Alexander Francis Lydon printed by Benjamin Fawcett, some heightened with gum arabic. Publisher's green cloth stamped in gilt and blind. A very fine, fresh copy, the plates remarkably bright with no foxing or offsetting and the bindings similarly unusually well-preserved.
First edition of this authoritative practical handbook on the aviculture of exotic parrots, lories, cockatoos, and macaws. The detailed color plates are printed from wood-engravings using special inks and a chromoxylography technique pioneered by Benjamin Fawcett, to whom the work is dedicated. William Greene wrote on ornithology for popular and amateur audiences; his books were well received and Parrots in Captivity is his most important work
