Figure Studies for Perseus and the Graiae

black and white chalks on red paper

Unframed: 23 by 31cm., 9 by 12in.

Framed: 31 by 39cm., 12 by 15½in.

Purchased from an art dealer in Huntington, USA in August 2015 by the present owner
The nude studies relate to the crouching left hand figure in Burne-Jones’s Perseus and the Graiae (versions in the National Museum Wales, Southampton City Art Gallery and the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart). A draped study of the same figure, dated 1877, is in the collection of the Cecil French Bequest, and is reproduced in the catalogue of the 2008 Beauty Never Fails exhibition (no.11).
