Description
A WILLIAM IV CUT-GLASS CLARET JUG, CIRCA 1835
of askos form, the neck prism cut, the body cut with wings and broad flutes, applied with a strap handle, the base cut with a sunburst
The present claret jug is based on an Ancient Greek pottery form, the askos was a vessel used for pouring small amounts of liquid, usually oil. The form was popular amongst 19th century glass and silvermakers.
