"MOORISH" TWISTED WIRE CHANDELIER

circa 1895

leaded glass, twisted brass wire, silvered bronze, glass

30 in. (76.2 cm) drop

14¼ in. (36.2 cm) diameter of shade

Overall in very good condition. This early work by Tiffany studios features a complex twisted wire design over a leaded, pale blue, geometric shade. The twisted wire with corrosion throughout and some verdigris and surface soiling consistent with age. The shade opens via a hinge along the upper border of one of the four panels; the hinge has been recently conserved to ensure functionality. The interior of the shade is outfitted with two intersecting pipes set just within the aperture of the shade; these pipes were possibly used for burning kerosene at some point in the history of the piece. The underside of the shade with some open screw holes which indicate there may at some point have been an additional element attached to the shade. The chandelier is accompanied by an associated silvered bronze ceiling medallion with opalescent glass cabochons. The ceiling medallion presents with wear and scattered losses to the silvering, as well as scattered surface scratches, abrasions, and corrosion throughout. The cabochons with some minor trapped surface soiling within the settings. The chandelier lacks a ceiling canopy. The balls appear to be all original and assembled to replaced chains. With a replaced socket. A rare, artistic and complex early work by Tiffany Studio.
