Description

HERZL, THEODOR

PRINTED LETTER SIGNED ("HERZL") AS CHAIRMAN OF THE ZIONIST ACTION COMMITTEE ("FÜR DAS ACTIONSCOMITÉ"),

in German, addressing fellow members of the organization and urging them to agitate for a vernacular (ie Yiddish) edition of the German Zionist weekly Die Welt, as it had become apparent that the original German edition could not connect with all strata of society and that it was necessary to produce a journal that would report events from a reliable Zionist perspective and become the official bulletin of the Zionist organization, noting Rosenfeld's efforts for a Russian edition, explaining that this should not be something just left to individuals, urging colleagues to agitate urgently for an edition in Yiddish and closing with the greeting "mit Ziongruss hochachtungsvoll", 1 page, 4to, mimeographed text, also signed by the secretary Oser Kokesch, Vienna, 3 March 1901

"...Es ist Ihnen bekannt, dass die Jargonausgabe der "Welt" dem Bedürfnisse entsprang, Fühling mit denjenigen Volksschichten zu finden, die mit der deutschen "Welt" nicht zu erreichen waren...Wir bitten Sie ebenso eindringlich wie höflich, dies Agitation unverzüglich aufzunehmen..."

Theodor Herzl (1860-1904) had founded Die Welt in May 1897 at his own expense., to agitate for the establishment of a Jewish state in the historic "Land of Israel".
