Cloisonne enamel censers of this type and fine quality were made for altar sets placed in Buddhist temples and palaces. Compare a five-piece altar set illustrated in situ in the Qianqing Gong (Mansion of Heavenly Purity), illustrated in Chuimei Ho and Bennet Bronson, Splendours of China's Forbidden City, Chicago, 2004, fig. 32. Compare two censers of the same size and shape with slight variations in the decor, sold Sotheby's Paris, 12th December 2013, lot 3, and another example sold in Sotheby's Paris, 23rd June 2016, lot 91.
