As one of the most active members of the renowned ZERO group working to move the lines of art and society in the early 1960s, Günther Uecker played a key role in the renewal of the artistic conventions of the second half of the 20th century.

His canvases covered with an infinite number of nails, giving them an aspect that is as sculptural as it is tactile, breach immateriality while remaining rooted in everyday life by choosing a material as simple as the nail.

In line with oriental philosophies and following the precepts of Buddhism, Taoism and Islam, Günther Uecker's works are also the fruit of rituals consisting of the incessant repetition of simple actions.  Weißer Schrei (“White Cry”) is the result of one of these rituals in which the artist hammered the canvas until he reached a meditative state.  Coming from a prestigious European private collection, this work thus illustrates the esoteric research as well as the activism of Günther Uecker.

The nail is the ideal object with which to model light and shadow – to make time visible… It protrudes as a tactile feeler from the flat surface, much like a sundial.

L’un des membres les plus actifs du célèbre groupe ZERO œuvrant à faire bouger les lignes de l’art et de la société au début des années 1960, Günther Uecker a joué un rôle essentiel dans le renouvellement des codes artistiques de la seconde partie du XXe siècle.

Ses toiles recouvertes d’une infinité de clous leur donnant un aspect aussi sculptural que tactile ont en effet permis d’ouvrir une brèche sur l’immatérialité tout en demeurant enracinées dans la vie quotidienne par le choix d’un matériau aussi simple et brut que le clou.

En phase avec les philosophies orientales et suivant les préceptes du bouddhisme, du taoïsme et de l’islam, les œuvres de Günther Uecker sont aussi le fruit de rituels consistant en la répétition incessante d’actions simples. Weißer Schrei ou Cri Blanc en français est le résultat d’un de ces rituels au cours duquel l’artiste a martelé la toile jusqu’à atteindre un état méditatif. Provenant d’une prestigieuse collection privée européenne, cette œuvre illustre ainsi les recherches ésotériques aussi bien que l’activisme de Günther Uecker.

Le clou est l’objet idéal pour sculpter l’ombre et la lumière et donner corps à l’espace-temps. Il affleure de la surface de la toile comme un capteur tactile, à la manière d’un cadran solaire.
