George Henry, called Maun-gwa-daus, was a chief of the Ojibwa nation, at Credit River in Canada. Interpreter at the Indian Affairs service, some authors noticed his proficiency in English. He traveled to Europe, especially in England and in France, and published about the Chippewa Indians.
Maun-gwa-daus was close to George Catlin, who knew Théodore Gudin. The artist probably helped organizing the meeting with the King Louis-Phillipe 1st, described in this painting.

George Henry, dit Maun-gwa-daus, était chef de la nation Ojibwa à Credit River, au Canada. Interprète au service des Affaires indiennes, différents écrits témoignent de sa maîtrise de la langue anglaise. Il voyage en Europe notamment en Angleterre et en France, et écrit un ouvrage sur les indiens Chippewa.
Maun-gwa-daus était proche de George Catlin, et lui-même connaissait Théodore Gudin. C'est probablement lui qui œuvra pour organiser la rencontre avec le roi Louis-Philippe 1er, relatée dans le présent tableau.
