George Tjungurrayi began to develop his distinctive minimalist linier style around 1996 and in 1998 held his first major solo exhibition of these much revered paintings at Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi in Melbourne. The gallery was hung with around a dozen large scale works, each of a different palette and the exhibition was the talk of the Melbourne contemporary art scene. The fields of narrow lines, which 'warp' towards the opposite edges of the canvas, relate to designs engraved on shields in the Western Desert, as well as to a conceptualization of the physical appearance of the country around Lake Mackay, with its parallel ridges of sand dunes.
