'Fallen Tree, Kern River Canyon' (Sequoia National Park, California)

gelatin silver print, title in ink, annotations in pencil and ink, the photographer's Carmel studio stamp (BMFA 11), and with a Michael and Jeanne Adams collection stamp on the reverse, framed, circa 1935, probably printed between 1973 and 1977; accompanied by a certificate of provenance, signed by Michael and Jeanne Adams (2)

image: 9 7/8 by 12 in. (25.1 by 30.5 cm.)

frame: 18 3/4 by 22 3/4 in. (47.6 by 57.8 cm.)

This photograph, on double-weight paper with a surface sheen, is in generally excellent condition. It is trimmed to the image and there is some wear to the edges. When examined in raking light, the following are visible: pinpoint-sized impressions and deposits of original retouching; and a few hairline scratches in the sky.

The following are written in an unidentified hand on the reverse: 'Pl. 62 Y. R. L.' in ink; and 'p. 89'; 'F 5-S-52 P'; '8 1/8" high'; '86 [circled]'; 'MIA# 0355'; '#1051'; and 'AA/1869' in pencil.

When examined under ultraviolet light, this photograph appears to fluoresce.

Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamp 11 on the reverse of the mount: 1973 through 1977
