Boards and Paint (Weathered Wood)

gelatin silver print, mounted, signed in ink on the mount, the photographer's San Francisco studio stamp (BMFA 4) on the reverse, framed, 1959, probably printed before 1962

image: 10 5/8 by 13 5/8 in. (27 by 34.6 cm.)

frame: 22 7/8 by 26 3/4 in. (58.1 by 67.9 cm.)

This print is in generally excellent condition. There are some tiny deposits of original retouching in the lower left corner. The mount is darkened overall but somewhat more in a band around the periphery of the image. There is a fingerprint along the center left mount edge.

The reverse of the mount is darkened around the edges and soiled. The following is written in an unidentified hand in pencil on the reverse: 'C2091' (twice); 'Weathered Wood, S. F.'; and '$1500.'

Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamp 11 on the reverse of the mount: 1952 through 1962.
