Pair of Console Tables
circa 1925
ironwork executed by Richard Desvallières
patinated wrought iron, pink marble
38 3/4 x 77 x 20 1/4 in. (98.4 x 195.5 x 51.4 cm) each
Overall in very good condition. This spectacular lot epitomizes the collaboration between Richard Desvallières and Süe et Mare. The base of each console presents with highly artistic flower bouquets wonderfully conveyed through the ironwork. The patinated surfaces are very well-preserved overall and present with a homogenous black matte surface throughout. In person the patina coloration is much richer and deeper than it appears in the catalogue illustrations, which are slightly overexposed. The patina with occasional discoloration concentrated to the edges and revealing the iron undersurface.
The marble presents with great variation and nuance in color and veining which beautifully complements the iron structure. The marble with surface scratches and scuffing throughout consistent with gentle use, as well as indentations and minute losses concentrated to the edges. The marble also presents with occasional scattered instances of past restorations, namely filling to preexisting hairlines cracks and areas of loss to the marble concentrated to the edges of the tops, which are not visually distracting and blend in with the variegated marble surface. The filling with occasional and very small areas of loss as well. An outstanding pair of highly sculptural Console Tables with tremendous visual presence and exuberance.
