gilt copper, malachite, champlevé enamel
impressed JEAN GOULDEN and numbered CXLVII
3 1/2 x 10 1/2 x 8 in. (8.8 x 26.6 x 20.3 cm)
Overall in very good condition. The Grand Coffret is one of Goulden’s most accomplished masterworks, displaying his mastery of composition and enamel work. The coffret is functional with the lid opening from one side. The gilt copper surfaces present with oxidation and areas of discoloration throughout, consistent with age and more pronounced on the inside and underside of the object. As pictured in the catalogue photography, the patinated metal surfaces framing each of the three enameled areas present with losses to the silver patina throughout resulting in discoloration and minor oxidation throughout. The recessed areas with some very minor and scattered soiling consistent with age. The tarnished surfaces on the metal can be cleaned at the client’s discretion. The malachite and enameled surfaces present with variegated colors and display faint surface scratches and scattered minute losses which are not visually distracting, the largest two losses to the black enamel on the coffret’s lid each measuring approximately 1/8 inch wide. The coffret displays beautifully in person, displaying outstanding scale and a highly sophisticated geometric composition articulated in a sophisticated color palette of radiant enamels and rich malachite. A truly dazzling object.
