We would like to thank Alexandra Murphy for kindly confirming the authenticity of this lot and for writing the entry.
The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.:
This work has a lining of synthetic material applied with wax as an adhesive, which is not ideal. However, the surface is stable. The painting seems to be clean and varnished. Retouches are visible under ultraviolet light in very small dots across the top, and along the right and left edges. There are no restorations in the head, and only a small group in the lower center of the black coat. The retouches in the background have blanched and are now visible to the naked eye.
The work could be hung in its current state.
