Emma Ciardi was born in Venice and, like her father Guglielmo and brother Beppe (see previous lot), she became an internationally recognized artist. After first submitting work to the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris, Ciardi exhibited at the Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte di Venezia regularly from 1903 to 1932. Her expressive brushwork and sensitive eye for color captured imagined views of a courtly eighteenth century Venice and Italy which were particularly well received by English and American patrons. Her first solo show was at the Leicester Galleries, London in 1910 and in 1923 she exhibited at New York’s Howard Young Gallery, which would secure the exclusive rights to selling her work.
