The development of the crown winding system at the end of the 19th century brought with it the production and design of many more manageable forms of dress pocket watches. There was simultaneously at this time the increase in the mass production of cheaper grade watches available to the wider market as demand for watches increased. At the more luxury end of the scale however, Patek Philippe continued to dominate the market with the manufacture of elegant dress pocket watches such as this example, housed in heavy gold cases and with clean, understated dials.
