The picture is unlined and the original canvas is providing a stable structural support. There are localised areas of craquelure, particularly in the background.
UNDER ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT
There are reouchings around the girl's ear, to the left of her left eye, to her bonnet and gown and in the background. There is also an area of retouching at her throat where a ribbon or choker appears to have been over-painted.

This painting appears to depict the same model dressed in the same Eighteenth Century gown and bonnet as the woman in The Answer exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1897.
