Description

FRANCESCO ZUCCARELLI, R.A.

Pitigliano, Umbria 1702 - 1788 Florence

DIANA AND CALLISTO, WITH NYMPHS RESTING FROM THE HUNT

oil on canvas, unlined

62.2 x 50 cm.; 24½ x 19⅝ in.

Condition Report

The canvas has a firm relining. The paint surface is relatively clean, and the varnish is clear and even. There is a slight degree of wear visible throughout the paint surface. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals faint retouching to an apparent old repaired J-shaped tear, upper right, approx. 6 x 8 cm., as well as some fine lines of retouching to disguise the appearance of craquelure in the sky and through the group of figures in the foreground. Some of the branches on either side also appear to have been strengthened slightly. These do not disturb the legibility of the image, and the painting is in overall fairly good condition.
