STEPAN VLADISLAVOVICH BAKALOWICZ
At Her Toilet
signed in Latin, inscribed ROMAE and dated MCMXXIV l.l.
oil on canvas
46 by 36cm, 18 by 14¼in.
Original canvas. There is fine craquelure in places with some minor associated flecks of paint loss, most notably along the top edge. Faint stretcher bar marks are visible along the edges and there are minor frame abrasions. There are scuff marks to the fire in the lower left and to the carpet in the lower right. There is a light layer of surface dirt and some spots of dirt in places. Inspection under UV light reveals retouching to the sitter's thigh as well as some possible spots of retouching elsewhere, although a discoloured layer of varnish prevents more thorough analysis. Held in a gold-painted wooden frame with plaster mouldings.
