Jacques François Joseph Swebach-Desfontaines (1769–1823), first established his reputation as a painter of battle scenes - in particular the victories of Napoleon Bonaparte - and later as a draughtsman of genre subjects, as seen here. From 1802 until 1813 he was first painter at the Sevrès Porcelain Manufactory, where he was responsible for the service encyclopédique, created in 1806 for the marriage of Stéphanie de Beauharnais and Karl Ludwig, Grand Duke of Baden. Later, between 1815 and 1817 he worked at the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory in St Petersburg.
