Description

KILLADOON HOUSE, PROPERTY FROM AN IMPORTANT IRISH ESTATE

AN ITALIAN MAIOLICA ISTORIATO BOWL, CIRCA 1570, ATTRIBUTED TO MAESTRO DOMENEGO DA VENEZIA

of deep flared dish form, painted with a biblical scene of Abraham kneeling before three angels and Rebecca drawing water at a well, title in black script to the reverse Abran, within yellow concentric bands

25.2 cm (9 7/8 in) diameter

Probably acquired by Robert Clements, 1st Earl of Leitrim (1732-1804)

The subject on the present dish are scenes taken from the life of Abraham; three angels announce to Abraham that Sarah, in old age will bear him a son, Isaac and the figure in the foreground is Rebecca

who would be betrother to Isaac.

A dish with the same subject and by the same hand was sold Pandolfini, Florence, 17th April 2019, lot 34. See also Johanna Lessmann, Italienische Majolika, Katalog der Sammlung Herzon Anton Ulrich-Museum Braunschweig, Brunswick, 1979, pp. 460-2, nos. 737-738 for two documentarty dishes from 1568 painted with scenes from the life of Moses and allegories of the months of the years. The hand is very close to the present bowl, in particular the presesentation of the well in the cartouche titled "giugno" in no, 738.
