PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF LORD AND LADY FAIRHAVEN

A SILVER-GILT CAGEWORK BOITE A MINIATURES, FRANCOIS-CHARLES DELAVERNE, PARIS, CIRCA 1855

rectangular, inset with six views of the Château d’Armainvilliers and the park, French School, late 18th century, all bearing initials VB, maker's mark

8cm., 3⅛in. wide

In 1775 Louis, Duke of Penthièvre, inherited the château d’Armainvilliers in the Île-de-France from his cousin Louis-Charles, Comte d’Eu. Shortly afterwards he initiated improvements in the garden, employing Jean-Augustin Renard to design new buildings. Partly destroyed in the course of the Revolution, it was restored by the La Rochfoucauld-Doudeauville family during the Second Empire. Purchased by Edmond de Rothschild in 1877, the château was pulled down and replaced by modern structure.
