PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF LORD AND LADY FAIRHAVEN
A GERMAN SILVER EWER, PAUL JOBST SÜRY, HILDESHEIM, CIRCA 1728
Helmet-shaped, detachable foot, fitted with coins and profile medallions, applied and chased with Régence ornament, female mask below the spout, also fitted with both sides of two Osnabruck, Sede Vacante medals for 1728, crested below the spout with motto Deo non Fortuna
27.5cm., 11in. high
1416gr, 45oz. 10dwt.
The Prince bishopric of Osnabruck alternated between Catholic and Lutheran holders. Commemorated by the fitted medal in this ewer, the seat was vacant between the death on 14 August 1728 of the Lutheran Ernest Augustus II Duke of York and Albany, brother of King George I, and the investiture of the new Catholic prince Klemens August of Bavaria in the same year. The ewer may have been ordered by the cathedral chapter of Osnabruck to commemorate the end of the vacant period and arrival of Klemens August, who was also prince bishop of Hildesheim. Much of the recorded work of the goldsmith Paul Jobst Süry of Hildesheim is of a religious nature for local churches and cathedrals. The last prince bishop of Osnabruck was Frederick Duke of York and Albany 1763-1827, second son of George III, who became prince bishop when he was approximately 6 months old.
